Virtual Prairie

Post by zerocool » Tue May 27, 2008 9:08 pm

As a small multi boinc chruncher thought i will bring this one up. Virtual Prairie(ViP) is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in understanding clonal strategies in complex ecological systems. i see it is boinc powered and we have joined there as a small word of --warning--work units come in masses about 100 at a time for my little duo core system, lucky they are small wus credit seems to come out at a small rate,so alittle reading on this one before you think about running it ie some reports of heavy ram usage on diff versions folks have there, if any one has any thoughts on it, please let me know what you think will be interested to what you all think :smt017

I attached to this about a month ago but hav,nt crunched any thing yet. As well as heavy ram usage they don`t export stats so for me I`ll leave it for now untill its sorted. Seems a worth-while project if your into the enviroment stuff.

It's a Science project. It might be worthwhile.

a small update on vip.

Hello everybody,

- The computations we are doing "now" are organized as follows: we create a big number of wu (hundreds of thousands) that take a few weeks to complete. Once we have all the results, we analyze them and consequently we decide what to do in the following "computation campaign". This may create a long period of inactivity.
- The present "computation campaign" is almost done and that is one of the reasons that some clients can't get any work to do.
- the second reason for that is switching from HRCG to HRFG then back to HRCG. Some results are created while using HRFG won't be sent anywhere if HRCG is effective. HR is indeed a nightmare.
- for invalid results, I will take a closer look, and I will consider this for the next version of the application and I will try to find the appropriate HR classification.

So, hopefully we will be done with this "computation campaign" in one or two days. And I hope that in the next one we won't have these problems again.

Malek. this message was posted on the site yesterday for those of out of wus.

01 Sep 2008 AEST:

Our team stats page indicates Virtual Prairie is down. However the webpage(s) are up and running. I am unable to determine however if they are issuing and receiving work units.

Crunchers may have problems. If anyone is crunching this can you post here to let us know how you are going.

Virtual Prairie up or down? Take your pick.

I can reach the site, but it is listed as being unreachable. Regardless, I don't think there is work available (looking at BoincStats it seems that there has been no work from the project since around June)...
