Chess960@Home Homepage

Description:
Current goals:
- improve and extend the application workflow, bug fixing, add new features for the users (it's still alpha phase)
- play games (at the moment position 1-80) with different engine parameters to identify good starting positions for white and black
- add all played games to a database to publish them online
General goals:
- build a huge database with at least 1000 games per starting position (better 10000).
- use these games to develop some opening theory

Chess960 Project is challenging ALL MAC Users.

Post by TimeLord04 » Fri Nov 03, 2006 11:29 pm

It just came to my attention; as I was browsing through the Chess960 Forums and Threads... I just came to this:

Chess960 NOT currently supporting Apple Platform... <== (Click the Link to Chess960 and post therein to support MAC and help reach our Challenge goal. Thank you.) 8-D

Rytis states early in the Thread that, "Mac OS is not supported and the support for it is not planned. Sorry.", August 27, 2006.

JonasD replied, "If we find an apple developer, why not ?

But in general lowest priority.

If you can tell me at least 20 users who need the apple application then we increase the priority.
", August 28, 2006.

As of September 22, 2006; (hmmm... happened to be my Sister's B-Day), Chess960 is reported in the above mentioned Thread as having two, (2), Users signed up on the Project!!!

I fully support MAC as a Superior Platform. Especially with the advent and release of the original OS X. (Now several releases enhanced and glorified!) Since OS X has a Linux/Unix Kernel; there is no reason NOT to support MAC on Chess960!

I call out to ALL MAC Users and Developers on ALL other Projects! Chess960 claims they need a Developer even if/when they reach their suggested goal of 20 Users registered at Chess960!

I urge ALL MAC Users who like Chess to investigate Chess960@Home. Join the Project! Prove Rytis to be incorrect in his assumption that MAC is a secondary and lesser Platform!

Find JonasD a Developer. Get MAC running on Chess960!!! Thank you for your time, and good hunting MAC Users, everywhere!

While I do build PCs as my hobby and claimed Profession; I still own a PowerComputing's 604/132, (Apple 9500 Clone), running on MAC Classic OS 8.6... MAC IS SUPERIOR!!!

Pick up the gauntlet! Let's prove Rytis is incorrect. Let's show that MAC Users are willing to run the Chess960 Project and that Chess960 needs to support the MAC OS Platform!!!

Good Luck, and Go MAC go!!! :D

Chess960/alpha

Very small w/u's eh? Nothing over about 900 sec. in duration and with w/u' so small must not get alot of work or at least not steady work.

Knightmare, do you get alot of this:

10/22/2006 5:43:40 PM|chess960@home alpha|Message from server: No work sent
10/22/2006 5:43:40 PM|chess960@home alpha|Message from server: (there was work but it was committed to other platforms)

D.W.W.,

I have posted at Chess960, (as have others), in their Number Crunching Forum about this issue. The Assimilator at Chess960 is having "issues". They've been trying very hard to get it fixed; however, it keeps locking up in various ways. It is unexpected, and JonasD is on the case.

In the meantime, WU's from there will be very VERY sparse until the issue is found and resolved. Nothing anyone can do, accept "Suspend" in BOINC on that project. My RAC has fallen from 30+ to 24 in only a couple days because of the issue... It is now a wait and see game.

LOL

Thanks TL, I did get some work initially so you may not want so suspend it all together.

@ team
For those running Linux there may be more work for you than for Win based boxes give it a try and see hence the (there was work but it was committed to other platforms)

JonasD; head of Chess960, just posted in his Number Crunching Thread that he believes the problem to be "fixed", now. However; with that fix, comes some more fine tuning and restarting different parts of the Project to clear out the Errant Issues. He states that this could take some time, maybe a few days. So, (and this is difficult for me - <wink>), further "Patience" will be required.

<sigh> (Looks at clock... Looks at calendar... Looks back at clock...)

LMAO...

Anyone on Chess960 seeing these:

10/23/2006 7:46:46 AM|chess960@home alpha|Message from server: No work sent
10/23/2006 7:46:46 AM|chess960@home alpha|Message from server: (there was work but it was committed to other platforms)
10/23/2006 7:46:46 AM|chess960@home alpha|No work from project

Just got word from JonasD:

They have made the WU's semi-Platform specific. That is; if a WU that is first available in the list is "grabbed" by a Unix Platform Cruncher, then the Assimilator "locks" that WU to ONLY be released to three other Unix Crunchers... So, if a Windows Platform Cruncher tries to "grab" that 'available' WU - the above "Error Message" is given... Hence, it isn't an error, it is a new "Feature"... LOL

In that light, I have "Resumed" the Project and will hope to get WU's at some point... LOL

<sigh, again> (Looks at clock... Looks at "Messages"... Looks back at clock.)

Again, LMAO...

JonasD has cleared up all confusion on the "There was work, but it was committed to other Platforms." error Message.

As I mentioned in my last post that it is now NOT an error, but a feature; JonasD now clears things up more by stating, "...when we let mixed platforms crunch the same WU; many results were becoming invalidated. We chose to group WUs instead. When a new WU was released by the Assimilator, if the first person to grab it was a Unix Platform; then the WU became locked out to all other crunchers except Unix crunchers. This way WUs are now Platform Specific and validation errors are reduced." - (Semi-Paraphrased by me; but you get the idea.)

So, while this is making it difficult and challenging to get new work from the Project. New work is constantly being generated. However; now it seems that we've hit a snag that the work has become "First come, first served..."

I hope this helps answer questions, and minimize stress. (It did for me and my Type A personality...)

Happy Crunching to all, and to all a happy crunch.

We are now down to needing 13 Registered MAC Users at the Chess960 Project!!! Plus, we also still need a MAC Developer to assist JonasD and Rytis to get Chess960 to work for the upcoming minimum total of 20 Registered MAC Users that JonasD wants to see for the Project.

Please, don't stop at 20 Registered Users! Let's EXCEED that goal by leaps and bounds! I know that there are MANY Loyal and Dedicated MAC Users out there! Please, show your enthusiasm and support! Register at Chess960@Home and then Post at the Link provided here in the Challenge Post. That link goes directly to the Thread that JonasD and Rytis are monitoring for the Challenge! Thank you one and all for your continued support.
