Beware of synthetic vitamin C

Post by AC » Wed Oct 31, 2012 4:39 am

I've known about this for years and I'd like to share the info. There are a bunch of possible bad things that synthetic ascorbic acid might do in your body but all that is a bit more complicated.

Taking Too Much Vitamin C Can Be Dangerous, Study Finds

"Those who think that if a little vitamin C is good, more must be better should think again, says a team of British researchers, who found that a supplement of 500 milligrams a day could damage people's genes....."

Yeah I've been trying to find alternatives to supplements that only have pure ascorbic acid. Acerola extract as a source might be an option but many of the supplements with acerola also have added synthetic ascorbic acid. Some historic research has shown that certain flavonoids like quercetin and rutin in the mix may make ascorbic acid more bioavailable. I'll post the links to a few and also a study were they found that regular ascorbic acid didn't help osteoblasts.

A little more. And a possible protective role of manganese...

I found a few supplements last night that use fruit concentrates for vitamin c instead of synthetic ascorbic acid. One of them is Nature's Way Alive Vitamin C 100% Whole Food Complex. That one has acerola, goji, kiwi, and amla in it. :smt001
