Ya it's really quite disturbing really...just imagine how much of it was sold by say Walmart...or some other emporium of cheap plastic junk...the data on the health effects for everyone gets me...now how many cases of ADD, Autism, breast cancer, cystic fibrosis, prostate cancer, diabetes are caused by this stuff. Think of all the drink containers we have with just that one chemical as a major ingredient. For years we have thought that drinking water from a bottle is better then drinking tap water...or drinking water from a bottle is chemical free. I'd like to see a long term study on the effects of plastic baby bottles and the effects of this chemical from household sources on childhood development and compare it to the cases of ADD, Autism, type 2 diabetes and childhood obesity...I bet the results would be startling...(of course even a control group would have some exposure but it could be significantly limited) considering those conditions have just in the last say 15 years come out in the news as a growing trend.

I can attest to the plastic beads that they show as being the starting stage in the production chain since I worked in a injection molding production plan for 3M as a QC inspector when I was 18. We used to get them by the railroad car full. The dust in the hopper room was the stuff of legends...and I spent many hours in there sweeping up plastic dust with a dust mask on my face and goggles on. It gets into everything. if I were to guess by the look of the beads shown that was polyethylene.

And the worst part is it doesn't go away...it's persistent...just getting smaller and smaller but still an issue and all along since I was a kid they have been talking about plastic bags that are biodegradable which really aren't. Instead they are photodegradable just breaking down into smaller and smaller chunks till we can't see them anymore as a matter of course...but they are still there as a pollutant.

It makes me think about the items in my kitchen vs. what I remmber from Mom's growing up. For all this talk about 'green living' how many people still buy the plastic containers of things like milk and juice?

My cat's containers are plastic. Food / water weekly feeders, a storage container that holds up to 25 pounds of food- as ooposed to keeping the food in the bag. And the kitty box.

As for the kitty box. I have noticed that over time it does become stained - so there is a percentage of absorption happening. I have heard of metallic litter boxes- which are simply plastic pans with metallic covers.

As silly / laughable as it sounds- I have considered a ceramic or terracotta kitty box - the glaze 'should' prevent absorption.

I don't know if it would make a difference now to switch to something else- like metal or porcelean dishes / containers. The items would I curtainly have would still be out there.
