Docu from Richard Dawkins

Post by Shaalae » Thu Jul 09, 2009 1:23 pm

i am an atheist and not a militant one. I don't need to convince others, everybody can do what he/she pleases. (But i am interested in a discussion anytime... :smt023 )
Someone posted a video 'against' atheism, so i post a documentary from Richard Dawkins to even things out. The Docu is quite good even if you are religious because it shows some twisted aspects of religion.
One thing i have to mention if you should watch this: Dawkins talks with a pastor who quotes the bible in his damnation of gay/lesbian couples. Together with a theologist who reads greek, we then looked this up in an original greek bible (it was one of paulus letters, i think 1kor 6,9) and there is absolutely no mention of anything about homosexuality - perhaps translation (Luther) or interpretation. Dawkins sadly missed that point.

1 Corinthians 6:9

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,

- on a personal note- I'm very saddened people who say 'God hates homosexuals' - this is a misgiven if ever there was one- the truth of it is that The Bible tells us God commands to love the man and to condemn the act.'

One of my favorite chapters is Galatians 5- especially vs 16-26. This speaks about living by the spirit. It lists the fruit of both the spirit and sin. I do find it interesting that those who claim that God hates the sexually immoral - are actually showing fruits of sin- according to Gal 6:19-21

"hatred, discord, fits of rage (sometimes), and dissensions."

Those who say that God hates the sexually immoral are actually contradicting Him.

1 Corinthians 6,9
Άρσενοκοίται - This is the original greek word (The NT was written in greek) for 'homosexuals'. it means Knabenschänder in german (i can't find an english translation). This has nothing to do with homosexuality, paulus condemns sexual relations between men and boys. It was a greek tradition that romans sometimes copied, that elderly men have a deep realtionship with boys; to teach them but also for intercourse. Homosexuality is not known in modern forms to the greeks or the romans (it was not unuasal in wartimes that men enjoyed themselves). The subject of that part is paulus' appeal for monogamy.
I think this is a good example for one problem with the bible: the influence of humans - somebody must have translated it that way, copied it to modern terms, but this disguises the original meaning a bit.
O you who turn the wheel and look windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

There is a very interesting documentary on "who wrote the bible"

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 8178434620

Or should I say how it was put together... no matter which way you look at it, the various translations by different parties in different languages and countries brings into question what the bible is.
Belief gets in the way of learning.
