DynaPing

Anything related to DynaPing

DynaPing

Description:
DynaPing uses Internet-connected computers to test if websites (from our database) are online or not. Currently a simple ping is sent to these websites and the result is stored.

DynaPing is different from other BOINC projects in that it uses your computers' internet connection while doing the work. It does not use the CPU processing power.

DynaPing is in early development stage. The application is fairly stable but may undergo a lot of changes. Workunits run for six hours. Credit is granted while the unit is running, not afterwards!. Credit may or may not be reset at any time. The amount of credit granted may also change.

Personal note: I have serious concerns about this project. Excessive pinging of websites has never been a good thing. Also this project uses your Internet access and thus may help you go through any data quota you have faster than normal. Also which websites are being checked and are they legal for you to access based on where you live? You may find yourself checking a site you would find questionable.

News from 2nd Sep 2009:

DynaPing it is. Almost all domain names with 'ping' are taken so it was quite hard to find a nice one.

The project server was placed in the datacenter and is running properly.

News from the 6th Sep 2009:

Email alerts have been turned on. When a domain does not respond to pings for more than five minutes an alert is emailed. When it comes back up after that another alert is sent.

News from 25th Oct 2009:

We do now send text messages to your cell phone when there is an alert. When a domain does not respond to pings for more than five minutes a text message is send. Text messages don't come free however, you have to purchase them on this page. Text messages don't work without a cell phone number so you'll have to add that to your account. Finaly you also have to enable them on your checks page.

You can now add extra contacts which will receive the same alerts as the user.

Account creation is open until we have 100 users. We encourage new users to try the non-standard functions this project offers!
Update: Sorry, we're there. User 101 sneaked in while I was disabling account creation.
