E@H has been experiencing load problems on the database server for most of this weekend. We are still working to try and get the project back to normal.

We still have serious problems with our database and are working on it. For the moment we disabled the scheduler to let the rest of the daemons work through the backlogs, i.e. no work is sent out or can be reported.

The daemons worked through the backlog last night, but turning on the scheduler this morning for a few hours brought the DB down again. Some of the problems have been identified and fixed or worked around, but we are still working on some issues. The project has been shut down again for some DB analyis runs, it will probably be up and down again a number of times today as we fix the remaining issues one by one.

We think we have found a simple fix for the database problems. The database has grown to 45 GB in size and has gotten too large for the physical memory of the machine that hosts it. However it turns out that due to some mistakes made in the project operations during the past weeks, about 80% of the work in the database is already completed. So we are running a db_purge task tonight that should remove this already-completed work from the database, leaving only the work-in-progress still in place in the database. If this is successful, then Einstein@Home should be back up and operating normally in about another 24 hours. Thank you for your patience!

The database is still purging, at a rate of about 400,000 workunits per day. We expect that this process will be completed by about 06:00 UTC tomorrow. At that time, we will do some additional database maintenance (table optimization) and then restart the project. So in total about another 24 hours will still be needed to bring everything back to normal. Thanks again for your patience during this unfortunate and long outage.

The Einstein@Home project is finally back up and running properly. The binary radio pulsar search may not be sending out new work for a couple of more days while we fix some VPN
problems between the WU generator in Hannover and the project database in Milwaukee. However the S5R5 gravitational-wave search IS sending out plenty of work. Many thanks again to our loyal volunteers and contributors for their patience!

Over the weekend the VPN problems were fixed, so the Arecibo Binary Radio Pulsar search is now also running correctly and sending out new work. So Einstein@Home has completely recovered and is back in full operation again!

Einstein@Home participants might enjoy watching a new series of short interviews with prominent experts in General Relativity, about black holes and other strange phenomena. This can be found at the ScienceFace web site.

I found this at the url when checking after Pilot's manager listed this on the message tab:

6/26/2009 8:47:31 PM Einstein@Home Scheduler request failed: HTTP file not found

June 26, 2009

Einstein@Home is down as the result of a fileserver crash. I am working on repairing the filesystem now but I do not have an estimate of how long this could take yet. Further news will be posted here when we know more.

Thank you for your patience.

Snow, straight from the Einstein homepage (this was all that was there):

Tue Aug 11 23:26:28 UTC 2009

Einstein@Home is down as the result of yet another fileserver crash. We are working on repairing the filesystem now but it will likely take a couple days before the project is running again. Further news will be posted here.

Thank you for your patience.

Well, when I go to: http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ I get the message previously posted.

Strange indeed...

The latest radio pulsar re-discoveries are available here. Our count is now at 31 detections of 19 different known radio pulsars. Our latest detection J1939+2134 is the second fastest spinning known pulsar, rotating almost 700 times in a single second. This means it has completed more than 4000 rotations while you've been reading this news post!

Our database is currently pretty slow, due to a large number of ABP2 results.
We are taking measures to keep the project running, but with a few restrictions:
The scheduler (task sending and reporting) is disabled part of the time
(clients will see a 'temporarily down for maintenance' message).
The server status page has been disabled.
We'll also reduce the time results are kept in the database.
Hopefully we will be able to return to normal operation in a few days.

The latest radio pulsar re-discoveries are available here.
Our count is now at 59 detections of 40 different known radio pulsars. The latest improvements of the search workflow increased the
average processing rate to about 200% of the Arecibo data taking rate.
This means we're now able to process the available backlog of data - thanks to our volunteers!

In preparation of the S5GC1 run, which should start at the end of the week, we switched off sending deletion requests for S5GCE data files
to the clients. This is to prevent clients from having to download them again for the new, saving bandwidth on both client and server side.

In transition to the S5GC1 run, we're currently sending out the rest of S5GCE tasks without locality scheduling.
This leads to additional transfer volume on both the client and the server side.
If you care about data volume or have a slow internet connection, you should suspend Einstein@Home for a few hours or days.
Our download mirrors are currently overloaded. We hope that things will be back to normal once we start shipping out
S5GC1 work hopefully in less than an hour.

12 Aug 2010:

We are delighted to announce that Einstein@Home has made its first discovery: a radio pulsar, found in data from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

Details are available in a paper published online today by Science.

A press-conference webcast about this first discovery is also available.

The name of the pulsar is PSR J2007+2722. It is a 40.8 Hz isolated pulsar, 17,000 light years distant in the plane of the Galaxy, and is most likely a Disrupted Recycled Pulsar (DRP). If so, it is the fastest DRP yet discovered.

The Einstein@Home volunteers whose computers found the pulsar with the highest significance are Chris and Helen Colvin, from Ames Iowa and Daniel Gebhardt, Musikinformatik, Universitaet Mainz.

Additional information about the discovery is available on our web pages.

We thank ALL Einstein@Home volunteers for their support, and look forward eagerly to our next discovery.

Bruce Allen, Director, Einstein@Home
