In the last several months we've seen a number of passings among celebrities and well knowns- Since at least two of us tend to share the news here- I thought it would be a good idea to have a section or thread for the posts.

---------------

Leader of the Brat Pack dies:

John Hughes was the director of movies such as Ferris Buellers Day Off and The Breakfast Club; films most of us grew up with and still love. It is very sad to hear he passed on. RIP Mr Hughes...

The director died after a heart attack in New York, his spokeswoman said.

Hughes was the director of such successful films as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

He was also a leading scriptwriter, penning films such as Pretty in Pink and Home Alone.

Over the past decade, Hughes withdrew from Hollywood and became a farmer in the Midwestern state of Illinois.

Whenever someone mentions "coming to America to find a better life" I think of Hughes' character Long Duck Dong, from Sixteen Candles. What a hero! He chased down the American Dream and bagged it in Shermer, IL!

I understand he was performing once a week in an NYC club, up until perhaps a couple of years ago. Wishing you a good journey, Paul.

Delayed Report..... From Gateworld.net

‘Nick Ballard’ actor Jan Rubes dead at 89

Thursday - July 2, 2009

Category: ACTORS | Tags: SG-1

by Darren Sumner

Actor, broadcaster and opera singer Jan Rubes, who brought to life one of the most memorable guest characters in the early years of Stargate SG-1, has passed away. Rubes played Nicholas Ballard, Daniel Jackson’s grandfather, in the third season episode “Crystal Skull.”

The family of the Czech-born actor announced his death at age 89 on Tuesday. No cause of death was released.

Rubes appeared in more than 40 feature films, after getting his big break when he was cast opposite Harrison Ford in the 1985 film Witness.

In 2000’s “Crystal Skull,” he played an archaeologist who had been committed to a mental institution after he claimed that an ancient artifact discovered in South America had transported him to a place where he met “giant aliens.” His story turned out to be true, and Daniel was reconciled with his grandfather — who had chosen not to raise him after Daniel’s parents had been killed.

The episode left the character as one of Stargate’s most talked-about loose ends, as Nick is left on the alien planet as Earth’s ambassador to a race of incorporeal beings who consider themselves fellow enemies of the Goa’uld.

Jan Rubes is survived by his wife, actress Susan Douglas, sons Jonathan and Tony and three grandsons.

Read more about his distinguished career at CBC News.

Missing actor Andrew Koenig killed himself: father

Fri Feb 26, 8:49 am ET

VANCOUVER (Reuters) – Missing U.S. actor Andrew Koenig, who starred in the 1980s television comedy "Growing Pains," killed himself, his distraught father said Thursday after police located his body in an isolated area of a park.

"Our son took his own life," Walter Koenig, who portrayed Lieutenant Pavel Chekov in the original "Star Trek" TV series, told reporters at a late afternoon news conference.

Andrew Koenig, 41, was last seen on February 14 when he left the Vancouver apartment of a friend he had been visiting, and he was reported missing four days later after his father, in Los Angeles, received a despondent letter from his son.

Damn.

I had heard he was missing from a notice on Memory Alpha (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Portal:Main)

Quote:
The body of Andrew Koenig was found February 25, 2010, in the Stanley Park area of Vancouver, British Columbia. He is believed to have committed suicide. Koenig was the son of Star Trek performers Walter Koenig and Judy Levitt and had himself appeared as Tumak in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Sanctuary". He was 41 years old.

Michael Blosil, Marie Osmond's son, left suicide note to pal; Osmond in seclusion

Michael Blosil, the 18-year-old son of Marie Osmond who committed suicide Friday night by jumping from his downtown Los Angeles apartment building, left a note for a woman he called his only true friend and text messaged her before he jumped, TMZ.com reports. Very shortly after the woman, who lived in Blosil's building, arrived at his apartment and alerted his roommates about the note, they heard sirens and saw emergency vehicles arrive outside the building.

Meanwhile, Marie Osmond is in seclusion, "finding solace in her faith and family," according to her friend, Entertainment Tonight anchor Mary Hart, who appeared on CBS' "Early Show" this morning.

In 2007, Osmond announced that Blosil, then 16, checked into rehab for undisclosed reasons. "He had been in and out of rehab," Hart says, "And, Marie, always looking for the silver lining, had always hoped for the best. … He was in excellent spirits. I've seen him throughout the years, but on this particular day, he and Marie were so excited about him attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in L.A. They were upbeat, and he was very happy, and seemed to be looking toward the future."

Donny and Marie's show at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has been suspended until further notice. "My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael," she said in a statement Saturday, "and ask that everyone respect out privacy during this difficult time."

Actor Corey Haim Dies at 38

Drug Overdose Eyed as Possible Cause of Death; Actor Reportedly Taking Medication to Battle Flu-Like Symptoms

(CBS/AP) Last Updated at 10:48 a.m. Eastern

Corey Haim, a 1980s teen heartthrob for his roles in "Lucas" and "The Lost Boys" whose career was blighted by drug abuse, has died. He was 38.

Haim died at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death and there were no other details, she said. Police Sgt. Michael Kammert said there's no evidence of foul play.

Corey Haim: The Lost Boy

Haim had flulike symptoms before he died and was getting over-the-counter and prescription medications, Police Sgt. William Mann said. The cause of death is unknown, Mann said.

"He could have succumbed to whatever (illness) he had or it could have been drugs. Who knows?" Mann said. "He has had a drug problem in the past."

Earlier, police officials told CBS Radio News that the actor died of an apparent drug overdose, though it's unknown what kind of drug was involved.

Update on Corey Haim

I found this in a post on The Rant Page - it was made back on May 4 2010. The source is reliable.

Quote:
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Pneumonia, not drug abuse, killed actor Corey Haim, the Los Angeles County Coroner ruled in an autopsy report released Tuesday.

Although the investigation into Haim's death began as a "suspected prescription medication overdose," toxicology tests "revealed no significant contributing factors" from drugs, the coroner reported.

The autopsy found "an extremely large amount" of swelling in Haim's lungs, it said.

The ruling that his death was not related to his well-publicized drug addiction confirmed what his mother and manager have insisted for weeks: that Haim, 38, did not overdose.

Haim died March 10 after collapsing at the Los Angeles apartment he shared with his mother.

Although the 1980s teen actor battled drug addiction for decades, his death came when Haim "was making major progress" with a program to wean him from pills, said his manager, Mark Heaslip.

Toxicology tests showed that Haim's blood did have "low levels" of a list of drugs, including an antidepressant (Prozac), an antipsychotic (Olanzapine), diazepam (Valium), a muscle relaxer (Carisoprodol), a tranquilizer (meprobamate) and THC (a chemical in marijuana).

Haim also was taking a cough suppressant, antihistamine and ibuprofen.

"These medications are present in low levels and are non-contributory to death," the autopsy report said.
